Apples, Pears, Cherries, same thing…

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

In an article found in a popular Macintosh rumor site, it was mentioned that the publishers of Cherry OS has stopped development and pulled it out of circulation.

It turns out, Cherry OS is being threatened with legal action by the developers of Pear PC. Cherry OS allegedly uses (without permission) code written by the Pear PC developers.

What is Cherry OS? What is Pear PC? What does this have anything to do with Apples, and why do I care?

According to the Pear PC website, it is an architecture-independent PowerPC platform emulator capable of running most PowerPC operating systems. Guess what? The Apple MacIntosh OS is a PowerPC operating system.

I use Linux most of the time. Yet when I watch Chris work on the Mac, I always drool at the beauty of the computer, the clean display, well organized desktop, easy to use interface, and abundance of quality pre-built software. (Those of us who live in linux land have access to powerful software but usually we have to compile them ourselves, and the interface isn’t as nice). Well, wouldn’t it be great if I could run Mac software on my Linux system? We can’t afford to buy another Mac for my use (or any other computer for that matter), so why not just emulate it.

Pear PC may be the answer to my desire. In the next few weeks I plan to test how well it performs on my aging 600 Mhz Intel Celeron PC. If its usable, I’ll have a Mac!

Enough writing… gotta surf to the PearPC download site and get my copy of Pear PC.
