Not Seeing is Believing

“It is better for her not to see you than to see you not there”

That was the opinion I gave Chris when I was about to drop her off at Zellers to buy some gifts for Mothers day. Chris, Caitlin and I were in the car. Caitlin was still awake. The plan was to drop Chris off at the store while Caitlin and I drove around the parking lot until Caitlin falls asleep. I told Chris to cover up the car seat so that Caitlin does not see Chris leave. That is when I made my comment. What I meant was that it would be better for Caitlin to remain covered as Chris leaves the car. She would continue to believe that her mother was beyond the cover. Her inability to see beyond the veil allows her to continue in her belief that her mother is still there. That would give her more comfort than if the veil was left opened to testify to her worst fear that her mother has left.

“Ignorance is bliss.” There may be truth to that statement. However there is still no substitute for the truth. Caitlin’s mother was not there. That may not be comforting to her, but the truth is that her mother was coming back. If only I could make her understand that truth, then I could have removed the veil that separated her belief from reality.

There are things in this world we can only accept by faith. Some of it may seem false, yet it gives us hope. Perhaps if the veil was removed we may see the current state of things as disproving our belief, yet it only appears so because of our lack of understanding. Once we understand the truth, the veil can be removed revealing a faith that has a basis for our belief.
